Laurence George “Larry” Mitchell died peacefully on August 23, 2019, at Duke Hospital in Durham, N.C., at the age of 67.
Larry was born on October 28, 1951, in Rock Hill, S.C., to Laurence “Cobby” Mitchell and Ellen Lambert Mitchell. He was the oldest of two siblings. He graduated from West Mecklenberg High School in Charlotte, N.C., and attended N.C. State University in Raleigh. He was an assistant manager at Kmart, and worked for the City of Raleigh for over 25 years. In the mid-1990s, he served as the first Recycling Coordinator for the city.
Larry was a devoted father to his son, Douglas Keith Mitchell, who lives in the Los Angeles area with his family. They enjoyed going to baseball games and concerts together.
Larry loved spending time at the South Carolina coast, dancing to beach music, watching N.C. State football and basketball, and purchasing cars at auction and fixing them up for resale.
Larry was preceded in death by his father Cobby. He is survived by his girlfriend Lucy Garcia, his son Douglas (Carrie) and grandsons Tyler and William, his mother Ellen, his sister Susan Mitchell (Reed Streifthau) and niece Rebecca Landon.
Larry’s family would like to thank the staff at Pettigrew Rehabilitation Center for their loving care of Larry over the last several years.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 31st at Friends Home West in Greensboro, NC at 10:30 am. Memorial contributions may be made to N.C. State University or the Arthritis Foundation (www.arthritis.org).
