Robert William Wade

December 4, 1943 ~ April 15, 2019 (age 75)

Robert Wade died peacefully April 15th at the age of 75 in Chatham County. Growing up in an artistic family in the dynamic community of Waterford, New York, he and his brother were surrounded by inspiration to follow their muse to become lifelong artists. At the age of 19 he hitchhiked across the entire country, settling for a time in the burgeoning bohemian community of San Francisco & meeting such inspirational luminaries as William Ginsberg in New York City.

He went to cartooning school The Art Student’s League in New York City in 1962. He met his wife Jean Karen Schutz after her failed date with another suitor. They quickly fell in love, got married in a Buddhist Temple in 1965, traveled the country, and eventually settled in Florida where they had their first child, Corey Huntington Wade. Seven years later they welcomed their daughter Angelica Joy Wade to the family.

Robert was one of the founding members of the Pelican Press Newspaper in Sarasota, Florida in the early 1970s. Robert Wade had the rare distinction of supporting his family entirely with his artistic pursuits. Some of his clients included, Busch Gardens, Outback Steakhouse, Carrabbas, and Whole Foods. His son Corey followed his passion for music to Los Angeles where he lives today creating art and working as the CEO of several companies in the digital marketing space. His daughter Joy moved with the family to North Carolina in 1999. She married Anthony Lester in 2004 and now works as an independent artist and art teacher in Clayton, NC.

Robert switched from commercial art to his true passion of fine art in recent years, creating large mixed-media pieces which are featured in galleries & large spaces in Chatham County. He continued to love and support his wife Jean in all of their five decades together, even through the challenge of Jean’s Altzheimers over the past decade.

He became a much-loved fixture of Pittsboro and Chatham County, always giving to those in need around him, He loved to sing with his musical friends, and had an active role in the local arts community. Robert Wade is survived by his wife Jean Wade (Schutz), his brother David, his sister Penny, his son Corey and his daughter Joy.
