David Eagle White III
David “Eagle” White III passed away on January 11th, 2021 at the age of 57. He was a true original and a kind heart with a sharp wit and creative, often irreverent take on the world. He was the kind of person who let homeless people shower in his house, fought for gay rights and racial and gender equality, despised bigots, and rescued animals.
Eagle graduated with a Bachelors degree in Radio and Television Broadcasting from UNC-Greensboro and moved to New York City where he worked as a paralegal for a number of years. For years he ran a beautiful antique and consignment shop, Déjà vu, in Raleigh NC and owned an appraisal business. More recently in the fall of 2020, he undertook a creative endeavor with The Eastern Oregon Leather Shop. He made hilarious “head shot cameos” as David, the Virtual Assistant, in The Leather Shop Vlog which can be found on YouTube.
Eagle founded a large food pantry in the 1980s to help the LGBTQ population and homeless populations cope with the HIV/AIDS pandemic. His extensive volunteer work earned him the much-esteemed Governor’s award.
He was a gifted writer and was published in the Indy Weekly and other publications and was Editor in Chief of the Historic Oakwood News Magazine. He was also a talented singer and pianist, and could take even the most dilapidated antique and make it beautiful again.
Eagle is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Barnsley Brown and her daughter, Zilia, his mother, Suzanne Lewis Brown, and his three beloved felines, Sammy, Thompkins, and Arthur.
The world has lost a kind big-hearted artistic soul who truly cared about people and animals and tried to help those in need. Soar high Eagle, your family and friends love you!
The Celebration of Eagle’s Life will be Sunday, February 7th at 3 pm Eastern online.
