Dorothy Jean “Dot” Carnes Ashcraft, 88, of Raleigh died September 26, 2023, at UNC Rex Hospital.
She is survived by her brother, Ranse Carnes; her daughter, Keven Cockrell; her son, Dan Ellis; three grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Mildred Meeler; her brothers, James and Kenneth Carnes; her first husband, Daniel Ellis; her second husband, Edwin Ashcraft; and her longtime companion, Lelon Dollar.
Born in Gaston County, North Carolina, Dot married her high-school sweetheart and had two children. The young family briefly lived in Charlotte and then moved to Raleigh, where Dot joined Athens Drive Baptist Church and remained a devoted member there for the rest of her life.
Dot’s natural geniality ensured that nobody remained a stranger in her amiable company. She worked in retail, making cheese trays and interacting with customers at Hickory Farms for many years before moving into clothing sales. She was also adept at cooking and tailoring in her own right, and she enjoyed making food and clothes for her family. Upon retirement, she relished fine dining and visiting family and friends with her beloved companion, Lelon Dollar.
Pastor Tim Howell will lead a memorial service at Athens Drive Baptist Church on October 15 at 3:00 p.m.
