Frances Elaine Cragg, 78, of Durham, NC, died Tuesday, February 16, 2021, at Duke Regional Hospital after a long and valiant battle with heart and lung disease. She was born April 29, 1942, in Jasper County, South Carolina, to Gussie and Maggie Laurel. She graduated from Jasper County High School and moved to New York City with her elder siblings. There she met and married Christopher Cragg and from that union was born a daughter and a son.
She retired from Marriott after 30 years as a Cook. She was a longtime faithful member of the Jehovah Witnesses having been baptized in 1970. After retirement, she kept her cooking skills sharp on occasion with tasty surprises, travelled on several cruises, enjoyed her television game shows and comedies, and enjoyed her family as well as her friends at the Sigel Park congregation. She continued her ministry with the University Drive congregation after moving to Durham with her daughter and Sylvia Williams, her other faithful caretaker.
Survivors include her two children, Helena Cragg (Sylvia) of Durham, NC and Derrick Cragg (Kim) of Atlanta, GA; her eldest sister Elizabeth King of New York, NY; a host of loving nieces and nephews and other family, and her spiritual sister Norma Samuels. She was preceded in death by her parents; eight siblings, Effie Holmes, Levy Laurel, Alma Starks, William Laurel, Shirley Holmes, Actris Laurel, Charles Laurel, and Alfred Laurel.
