Katherine “Kathy” Spinney, 74, of Gloucester, Massachusetts passed away peacefully on Sunday June 27, 2021, with her loving family by her side. Kathy was born April 3, 1947 in Gloucester, Massachusetts to the late Margaret and Charleton J. Herdman. She quickly gained the nickname of “Chickie” for how she chirped as a baby. The moniker stuck even as she moved to Goldsboro, North Carolina in 1983 with her husband and daughter, Terri. Chickie was a staple around the family pool, wearing her bathing suit from dawn to dusk. She created a gathering place for Terri and her friends poolside – keeping them well fed and entertained.
She worked in the hotel industry for over 20 years, quickly becoming a supervisor in housekeeping services. Chickie became Kathy when she moved to Jacksonville in 1999 and then eventually moved to Durham to be close to her daughter and son-in-law, Line Dempsey. She retired from UNC Chapel Hill in 2014 as a facilities supervisor.
Kathy was a dreamer, always coming up with plans for travel. That often resulted in vacations with Terri & Line and his mother, Bonnie. The four of them spent a lot of time in the mountains and the beach. One of her favorite trips was a cruise to the Caribbean over Thanksgiving in 2019.
Kathy is survived by her daughter, Terri (Spinney) Dempsey and her husband William (Line) Dempsey of Durham. She leaves behind many dear friends and family.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Duke Hospice who made her last days comfortable and peaceful – Hock Family Pavilion, 4023 N. Roxboro Street Durham, NC 27704; online at https://www.dukehealth.org/treatments/home-care-and-hospice/giving. The family is also collecting donations for a memorial bench.
