Louanna Lewis Roberts was the last-born child to the late Fannie McNeill Lewis. Her father was William McAllister. Born on October 29, 1950 in Scotland County, NC, she attended local schools eventually graduating from Shaw High in Laurinburg, NC in 1968. Louanna graduated from North Carolina Central University in 1972, earning a BA degree in Sociology with a History minor. At NCCU, she was a very active participant in campus life, joining several organizations to include Who’s Who, Small Colleges of America and pledging the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Additionally, she took executive education courses from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, graduate courses in organizational development and human resource management from UNC-CH, and Duke University, respectively. She held professional certificates in labor contract administration and negotiation, arbitration, management training and mediation. Our “Queen” departed her earthly body on Thursday, October 15, 2020.
In August 1972, Louanna was hired by Duke University Health Service as a Clinic Receptionist. The span of her work career presented numerous training and promotional opportunities within the Duke network, of which, she aggressively and selectively pursued until her full retirement. Some positions held by Louanna included Clinic Registration Supervisor, Management Trainee, Senior Labor Relations Representative, and Manager of Employee & Labor Relations. Her last Duke assignment was Human Resources Director – Medical Center. After her retirement, Louanna remained very busy and received much joy from building her very own Mary Kay business. Despite the attention her business demanded, Louanna made time for community and political involvement by serving as Treasurer of the Emorywood Estates Community Association, volunteering at voting polls on Election Day and many other miscellaneous activities. During her college years she met and maintained a relationship with her future husband, Willie Lewis Roberts. They married on June 30, 1980 and that union bore two children, Schuyler and Erin, whom she truly loved and protected with the vigilance of a lioness. She managed to negotiate the fine line of strict mother disciplinarian and respected friend very well. Louanna enjoyed cooking, shopping, traveling, spending quality time with loved ones, and making people laugh.
As a devoted and faithful member of what is now Life International Church, Louanna served in various capacities from Deaconess, Minister, Elder and finally as a Board Member until her health would no longer allow her to serve.
