Maria Kostuch Obituary

On Wednesday, January 17, 2024, our beautiful and bright Maria Kostuch passed away after a diagnosis of cancer at the age of 91.

Maria was born on May 15, 1932, in Stuttgart, Germany to Charlotte (Mueck) and Franz Habicht.  Maria’s mother and infant brother, Franz Erich, died when she was 3 years old.  With her father remarrying Rosa Siegele, she and her brother, Paul Habicht, became the older of 5 more siblings.

Being the eldest of 7 children in wartime Germany was difficult, yet the bright spirit of Maria prevailed.  Post WW2 she completed Oberschule and then one year of business school, starting work at age 15, as a typist.   As Americans occupied her home city of Stuttgart, she had a clerical job on the US Army base. It was here that she met her American GI husband, Richard Kostuch. They married in 1953 and upon Richard’s military discharge, they embarked for their new life in the USA. Settling in Stevens Point, WI, Dick and Maria built a life for themselves and their two daughters, Patricia and Kim.

Maria had a style and glamour that was accentuated by her kind and generous spirit.  She was a devoted wife and mother, talented artist and creative person with a gentle, gracious manner and sparkling smile. Maria and Dick traveled to many places with tropical destinations her favorites, especially Tahiti.

Two grandsons enriched her life, and she had special relationships with both Steven and Christopher Lange.  She was their loving “Omi”.

With retirement, she and Dick moved from their “little place in the woods” of Wisconsin to an eventual full-time home in Bonita Springs, FL.  This was their little slice of paradise.  In recent years, they moved to Raleigh, NC, to be closer to their family.

Maria was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Paul Habicht and Franz Erich Habicht, her stepmother, Rosa Habicht, her stepbrother, Franz Habicht, stepsister, Lotte Bauerle, and her beloved grandson, Steven B. Lange.

She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Richard Kostuch, daughters Patricia (Ronald) Lange (Eau Claire, WI) and Kim (Russell) Secter (Cary, NC), grandson Christopher (Rebecca) Lange, great-grandson, Jake Lange (age 12) and great-granddaughter, Gretchen Lange (3 months).

She is also survived by stepsisters Hilde Gaderer and Lisa (Gerhard) Raible, and her stepbrother, Anton (Heidi) Habicht and many nieces and nephews.

Final arrangements are being handled by R M Ferguson Funeral Service of Raleigh, NC, with interment at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Eau Claire, WI, at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Transitions LifeCare at transitionslifecare.org/donate or mail a check to Attn: Philanthropy Department, Transitions LifeCare, 250 Hospice Circle,  Raleigh, NC 27607.
